Riverside

Typeface

2021

A typeface inspired by Central Park. “Organic forms within a symmetrical structure”.

Located in the centre of Manhattan, the Park provides a break in the organised grid structure of New York City. Although the contents of the Park follow natural winding paths and organic pastures, the plot of Central Park remains as rigid and organised as the street layout of Manhattan itself.

These characteristics are all taken into account and portrayed in the design of this typeface. Each glyph shares the same rectangular proportions (besides M+W which take the space of 2 glyphs and the channel inbetween). This provides the rigid and uniform ‘plot’ of land for the organic shapes to fill.

The concept behind the design of the typeface is that each glyph follows the characteristics of Central Park. In isolation, each character represents the park itself: organic forms within a symmetrical structure. As a collective, Riverside reflects the wider nature of Manhattan’s organised composition which surrounds the park.

When used in a block of text, each glyph assumes the role of a street block and the channels inbetween represent the streets. Thereby, this typeface not only represents the attributes of Central Park itself but also the surrounding area, which plays an equally important role in the nature of the location as the Park itself.
